Custodians of Avoid Island: Conservation and Culture

Avoid Island, within Koinmerburra Country, is a vital nature refuge in the southern Great Barrier Reef, managed by QTFN. Free from invasive species, its pristine 83 hectares support diverse ecosystems, including mangroves, wetlands, and critically endangered Littoral Rainforest.

The island is a key nesting site for the vulnerable east Australian Flatback Turtle (Natator depressus), found only in Australia. Conservationists and rangers monitor these turtles, ensuring their survival.

Koinmerburra Rangers practice cultural burning—an ancient land management technique that rejuvenates ecosystems. This collaboration between QTFN and Traditional Custodians showcases the power of Indigenous knowledge in conservation.

Avoid Island is a testament to ecological and cultural stewardship, ensuring a future where nature and tradition thrive together.
