Fairyland
Fairyland is an iconic conservation property located on Lunawanna-Alonnah (Bruny Island). Its biogeography is unique, straddling the Neck, the isthmus joining north and south Bruny, and having several kilometres frontage to the Tasman Sea on the east and D’Entrecasteaux Channel on the west, with extensive freshwater wetlands on the property itself. The interaction of ecological processes has created a complex mosaic of wetlands, heathlands and coastal woodlands, with associated micro-environments sheltering threatened species like the eastern quoll, swift parrot and little penguin, while holding deep stores of carbon in their vegetation, soils and peat-rich lagoons.
Fairyland has benefitted from the long custodianship of the Davis family, the close association with indigenous land management practitioners guiding cultural fire back onto Country, and expert advice weaving science and natural-capital insight into every decision. The result shows that when traditional knowledge, family stewardship and evidence-based ecology meet, the landscape flourishes.
The work of protecting, enhancing and managing Fairyland’s natural values continues , including cultural burning, fuel load management, feral species eradication, wetlands protection and restoration, weed control and revegetation. Additionally, there is much to be done from an academic perspective, in better identifying species and tracking the outcomes of land management strategies. Similarly, using Fairyland as an example and encouragement to other landowners is the next phase we wish to embark on.
The opportunity now exists for partners to join with us through the purchase of Nature Credits, ensuring that the Fairyland project not only continues, but also lives up to its full potential.
